It’s official; Rolling In Roses is your local stop for British-made, sustainable, ethical and oh-so-cool bridal wear. Fashion loving brides, we’ve got you covered (literally…)!

Yes, you read that right. If stunning, contemporary-yet-comfortable designs are your thing but you also care where your garments are coming from, denounce the very idea of fast fashion and like to know a little more about the ethos behind your brands, then our amazing UNVEILED Network Member Rolling In Roses is for you, babes.

Today we’ve caught up with Hayley Neil, Rolling In Roses’ designer extraordinaire. Hayley handmakes each piece in York using tried, tested and traditional techniques she’s picked up during her impressive career.

We’ve been chatting all things bridal fashion, finding out where she gets her inspo and meandering down her career path to date, to find out a little more about the face behind the gowns. We know you’re not going to want to miss this one!

Hi Hayley!

Hi I’m Hayley, designer and director at Rolling In Roses. We make contemporary, sustainable bridalwear, ethically made by hand right here in York. We are a small-scale British label with a focus on thoughtful design and high-end craftsmanship, creating conscious bridalwear for individuals who walk to the beat of their own drum. Our fabrics are gentle to the earth, our dressmaking techniques traditional and refined, our designs a blend of the classic and the avant-garde. We are not fast fashion!

Where did your passion for bridal fashion begin?

Following an epiphany during an uninspiring shopping trip to find a gown for my sister, I opened my first boutique in York in March 2012. Taking the name ‘Glory Days’ from the Pulp song I actually walked down the aisle to on my own wedding day, the boutique offered vintage and antique bridal gowns alongside the bespoke service through which I created one-off wedding dresses tailored for individual clients. Seeing the demand for contemporary, cooler and more comfortable wedding gowns than those offered on the high street, I founded the Rolling In Roses label in 2016 as a platform for my personal design vision and I’ve never looked back.

Rolling In Roses flourished and outgrew the confines of Glory Days so the two companies were recently merged and rebranded under the Rolling In Roses name, and the York boutique is now the RIR flagship store. I truly can’t believe how lucky I am to be able to make a living doing what I love and making people happy; it’s a dream come true.

Having designed, sewed, sketched, and embroidered my way through school, I gained a degree in costume design at the Edinburgh College of Art and went on to work as a freelance costume designer, maker, and assistant in the worlds of theatre and film. Being lucky enough to work on an eclectic array of theatre productions and Bifa, Bafta, and Oscar winning films, I’ve gained knowledge and experience covering everything from contemporary streetwear to tailored Regency period suits, from 1930s evening gowns to spectacular fantasy costumes. This diversity of skills means a wide range of knowledge of fabrics and fit, and experience with garments of various functions suitable for all body types.

Lying awake at night deciding how to finish the perfect cuff or solving a tricky pattern drafting problem is par for the course, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

The UNVEILED team never fail to fall for the captivating bridal accessories of Debbie Carlisle. Here, we reveal the Sheffield designer’s 2020 ‘Moonlight’ collection whilst finding out more about her carefully considered approach and beautiful handcrafted creations.

Debbie says: I began designing and making bridal accessories for my own wedding in 2009, and I just couldn’t stop! I’m incredibly lucky to still be creating accessories for brides and wedding boutiques all over the world more than ten years on.

My pieces have a deconstructed, wild and natural, bohemian feel with a classic and sometimes vintage edge. They also have a delicate ethereal element – from tiny hairpins to statement headbands and hair vines.

Rachel Simpson’s collection of signature, vintage-inspired bridal shoes offers luxury, comfort and style all with an affordable price tag. We take a look at her latest Spring/Summer Collection whilst UNVEILED’s Features Editor, Rachel Hirst, talks to the top designer about how her commercial experience, distinctive silhouettes and passion for traditional shoe-making result in beautifully unique heels.

Rachel says: The Rachel Simpson brand began in 2008 with a simple vision: to create a collection of shoes which looked bespoke and were made in the traditional way but that were at an affordable price point for a luxury product.

Previously I’d handmade bespoke shoes in my own workshop whilst also working as a freelance designer for a number of high street brands, and this is when I spotted a huge gap in the bridal shoe market. At the time bridal shoes were either very traditional, satin numbers you’d never consider wearing again or high-end Jimmy Choos, which were right at the other end of the scale with nothing much in between.

Editor-In-Chief Julia Braime worked with an exclusive edit of pieces from the new collections by Marylise and Rembo Styling to produce UNVEILED’s ‘Siren Song’ fashion editorial. Between shots, Julia caught up with Marylise & Rembo Fashion Group Junior CEO, Chiara De Vlieger.

What do you love about Marylise & Rembo Fashion Group’s work?

Getting married is a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience! it’s something magical.

We have a great team and it’s so refreshing to make our bridal designs really fashionable. The mission of Marylise & Rembo Fashion Group is to inspire brides worldwide and help to create an unforgettable day. To achieve this, team spirit and creativity are essential, two of the six major values of our company.

How did the Marylise and Rembo Styling labels begin, and what is the ethos behind the brands?

Marylise & Rembo Fashion Group is a Belgian family business that has specialised for decades in the design and production of high quality wedding dresses.

Starting as a hat shop in 1926, the business subsequently evolved into a wholesale bridal accessories company with its own small bridal collection, before expanding to become the company that we know today; the driving force behind the two Belgian bridal brands Marylise and Rembo Styling.

The company has both the knowhow and expertise in-house from design to production and sales. In 2017 there are 629 bridal boutiques in 20 different countries from Europe to America, Russia, Australia, China and Japan, with 29 stores in Belgium. The family business currently has 84 employees and recently the fourth generation of the family took the helm of the company.

Apart from the various creations that can be found at Marylise and Rembo Styling, all of the wedding dresses bear the mark of unique craftsmanship; they are individually produced in the traditional way, and with lots of love, by highly skilled seamstresses in Portugal. The Portuguese workshop is the heart and soul of the group and acts as a well-oiled machine, able to respond quickly to new demands from the market with both brands.

A team of designers works across both brands. How does the design process work?

Everybody has their own style and experience and collaborate together as a real team. The designers brainstorm together to find new ideas and inspiration then choose new fabrics before the drawing part starts.

Each designer has their own influences and it’s very refreshing to bring all of these different visions into what we call our ‘creative lab’. Every designer maintains their own signature, but by uniting forces we’re able to deliver a more refined product.

Where do the team draw inspiration from and what are the key considerations when putting a new collection together?

Inspiration comes from couture and ready-to-wear. We pick out the most commercial trends and are very critical of what we select.

We choose a base that we like and then we translate it to a specific look that works for wedding gowns. For example knitwear is currently very popular and so we integrated it into our bridal collection. The general public might not be quite ready for such items, but as trendsetters we find it important to offer this in our collections.
